The Outer Hebrides named the best place to live for work-life balance

The Outer Hebrides have been named the best place in Britain to live and work in the most balanced way.

Online comparison site Money.co.uk analysed Office for National Statistics data for eight different factors, ranking island life highly on all positive lifestyle related factors like happiness (7th), serenity (6th) and life satisfaction (3rd).

The Western Isles have a significantly low unemployment rate, compared with the rest of the country - 2.8% vs 5% - while workers also have a good balance of hours worked weekly (35), and a solid year-on-year pay increase - up 9.8% vs the UK average of 3%.

Workers living in both the South East of England and Scotland have the best work-life balance. Analysis for the index reveals that 40% of the top 20 is dominated by the two regions collectively.

Overall, Scotland takes four of the 20 happiest places to live in Great Britain in 2020 - with the Outer Hebrides, East Dunbartonshire, the Orkney Islands and the Highlands.

More than a third of the local authorities within the top 20 are coastal - Outer Hebrides, West Devon, Saffron, Orkney islands, Highlands, Fylde, Arun.

Salman Haqqi, senior personal finance writer at money.co.uk says: "Maintaining a good work-life balance is important however, it is often easier said than done, especially right now.

“Juggling the pressures of home and work life during a pandemic is not easy but making time for yourself and reducing the amount of demands you put on yourself is key.”
