The other side of the Kanwar Yatra: What women face on the road

For devotees of Lord Shiva, the month of Sawan is a time to embark on a journey of faith. Kanwariyas travel from Haridwar carrying Ganga water, often walking for days before returning home to offer it at a nearby Shiva temple on Shivratri.

In recent years, more women have joined the Kanwar Yatra, undertaking the journey alongside men. But what is the experience like for them? What challenges do they face on the road, and what keeps them going?

We spoke to women kanwariyas to understand their journeys and the difficulties they encounter along the way.

Kirti tells us how she is making the long journey with her husband and their seven-month-old baby. Khushboo, meanwhile, speaks about her love for sports and the challenges that come with pursuing it.
