The other position Crystal Palace draw showed Everton desperately need to strengthen in the transfer window

The last few weeks have undoubtedly been much more promising for Everton.

The Blues have secured big wins over the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United at Goodison Park - reaffirming faith in Marco Silva that the club is heading back in the right direction.

However, away performances over that time haven't quite been as impressive, and instead have served as stark reminders as to where Everton still need to strengthen.

Most recently the Blues travelled to Crystal Palace on Saturday in high hopes after what was a brilliant 4-0 victory over Manchester United a week previously.

However, Silva's side returned to Merseyside with just the one point thanks to a 0-0 draw with the Eagles.

And many supporters highlighted Everton's central striking role as a problem area after the game, but the problem goes a little deeper than that.

Granted Dominic Calvert-Lewin is on a goalscoring drought at the minute, having not hit the back of the net since a disappointing defeat to Newcastle last month.

And the youngster did miss early chances against Palace which might have swung the match in the Blues' favour.

But the game was a frustrating one for the Blues, and once again highlighted a separate issue that has cropped up a few times this term.

When Everton have desperately needed a creative midfielder to break down a stubborn defence, too often they have been found lacking.

Roy Hodgson had clearly done his homework on his opponents this weekend. The Eagles might have been the hosts, but they weren't exactly adventurous on their own turf.

Instead, Palace let Everton dominate the majority of possession, something which the Blues haven't been used to this term - especially over the last few weeks.

The onus was then on Silva's side to find an effective way to break down an organised defence, which too often wasn't the case.

Sure the pace of Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin caused problems, but the supposed creative influence of the side in Gylfi Sigurdsson was quiet - making just one key pass throughout the 90 minutes.

Again the Blues' most effective outlets were down the flanks in Lucas Digne and Seamus Coleman in particular, who each made three key passes as their side searched for what would have been the winning goal.

In recent matches at home, this has been less of an issue as Everton have utilised an effective counter-attacking strategy perfectly.

This, of course, was particularly evident against Manchester United and the second goal in that match in particular, with Silva's side exploiting the massive spaces the visitors left behind when going forward.

Palace on Saturday didn't allow that, and that's where a more clever and creative midfielder could have been key.

Whether Andre Gomes would have made a big difference at Selhurst Park is up for discussion, but he has certainly proven himself to be a huge creative influence over recent weeks.

Regardless, however, Everton only have one match of the Barcelona loanees spell left before having to make a big decision over a potential permanent move in the future.

If he doesn't join the club, then Silva and Marcel Brands certainly need to find someone to replace his creative influence - if not even better it.

Putting the ball in the back of the net is one thing, but creating the opportunities to break stubborn teams down is another.

Everton need to learn how to do both.
