The Orphan actress Aryana Engineer is unrecognisable from child horror roles

Actress Aryana Engineer looks unrecognisable from the sweet child cast as deaf daughter Max Coleman in the horror film The Orphan.

The Canadian born star, 21, was discovered when she was just eight years old and spotted by her acting agent neighbour using sign language with her mother.

She was subsequently introduced to producers to portray the profoundly deaf character five-year-old Maxine.

Now over a decade on a picture shows Aryanna has still got her blonde curls but sweeps them back into a high pony tail, the former child actor shared a shot of her chilling out on Vancouver beach.

She opts for a over sized casual Harley Davidson sweatshirt and high waisted denim jeans as she poses amid the tranquil waters.

But she will forever be remembered for her powerful movie role in The Orphan with Director Collet-Serra recalling that blonde haired Aryana had the ability "while crying, to perform a scene - to immediately go from there still keeping this emotion", he knew she was the one for the part.

According to Collet-Serra, Aryana didn't understand what was going on during the making of Orphan and thought it was all a game.

Aryana, who is partially deaf and has Cochlear Implants which enhance her abilities to hear and speak, later fronted a Winter Olympics 2010 campaign and welcomed viewers in sign language.

And she continued her acting career and in 2012 she starred, alongside Milla Jovovich, as Becky in Resident Evil: Retribution , the fifth film in the franchise.

In 2015 she appeared in award winning short film Dreaming of Peggy Lee once again playing a deaf character.

She told on a Vimeo clip at the time: "I am super excited to appear in Peggy Lee and this project is close to my heart. It's great to do something myself and all deaf kids have a face. Not every kid is as lucky as I am."

The plot portrays two deaf children who escape their oppressive care home to sneak into a 1940's jazz club in London.
