The Original Factory Shop makes first pre-tax profit since 2019 after £30m sales jump

Discount retailer The Original Factory Shop made a pre-tax profit for the first time since 2019 as its sales jumped by more than £30m, new accounts have revealed.

The Burnley-headquartered company has reported a pre-tax profit of £6.6m for the 12 months to March 27, 2022, up from a restated loss of £2.9m in the prior year.

The business, which has been owned by private equity firm Duke Street since 2007, has also reported a turnover of £124.4m, a rise from £92m.

The newly-filed accounts also show the brand increased its headcount from 1,882 to 1,936 during the year.

A statement signed off by the board said: "Over the past two years The Original Factory Shop has, like all business, had to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

"The early part of the year continued to be affected by the ongoing uncertainty and impact of the pandemic.

"As the year progressed we saw the impact of rising inflation on product cost prices and consumer spending.

"The strength and resilience of the business model enabled us to continue to serve the needs of our local communities.
