The Open to go plastic free as water bottles removed in favour of free water stations

Royal Portrush, the picturesque venue for this year's The Open Championship is set on the beautiful unspoilt North Coast.

And organisers are keen that the North Coast is kept beautiful as they've taken the decision to remove single-use plastic water bottles from sale at the event.

The Open will become one of the first major global sporting events to remove single-use plastic water bottles, via an initiative supported by UN Environment’s Clean Seas campaign. #CleanSeas

Working with Bluewater, organisers say they're helping to drive positive change by installing Water Stations to provide free purified, chilled local water during the Championship.

Organisers added: "Please bring a refillable water bottle to The Open and help keep our seas clean. Look out for the on-site Water Stations and refill for free. Please note it will not be permitted to bring glass bottles on site."
