The Open 2019: Sunny skies and gentle breeze greets early starters on day two

Sunny skies and a gentle breeze greeted the early starters for the second day of the Open at Royal Portrush.

The wind strength was not as great as the opening day and so did not offer the same help for the first few holes.

Former Open champion Tom Lehman, at 60 most likely playing in his last event, led off Friday's starters at 6.35am alongside fellow veteran Miguel Angel-Jimenez, five years his junior, and the 20-year-old Chile's Joaquin Niemann.

The exemption for the winner at Lytham in 1996 expires this year due to his age and he will need to qualify if he wants to return.

His chances of making the cut, never mind the leading places, were slim at best as he teed off eight over and could not improve that with two pars in the first two holes.

Crowds at Portrush were, however, guaranteed seeing some of the first-round contenders early on Friday with England's Tyrrell Hatton and Tommy Fleetwood, at three under and just two off the lead, both off just before 8am.

Four-time major winner, reigning USPGA champion and world number one Brooks Koepka, also three under, was out at 8.03am with leader JB Holmes going out at 9.25am.
