The Open 2019: Shane Lowry back among the leaders after blistering start to second round

Ireland's Shane Lowry is back in contention at the top of The Open leaderboard after three birdies in as many holes in a blistering start to his second round at Royal Portrush.

The Offaly man was the clubhouse leader for large parts of yesterday evening, and went into this morning at four-under par, just one shot off the overnight leader JB Holmes.

And by the time Lowry teed off early this afternoon, Holmes, now through sixteen, had extended that lead out to eight-under par while Tommy Fleetwood enjoyed a successful second day to finish just one shot behind Holmes.

But Lowry, who's expected to battle difficult conditions this afternoon, has enjoyed a phenomenal start to his day, shooting birdies in the first three holes to bring him up to seven-under par and tied second four the tournament.

Lowry found deep rough on his drive on the fourth hole, but did well to get up and down to the green where his birdie attempt came inches away from dropping into the hole.

Heading towards the weekend, the Irishman is looking to capitalise on his good form this season as he tries to claim his first major title - his best finish was at the US Open in 2016 when he finished tied for second place.
