The Open 2019 result: Shane Lowry wins title with six-shot victory to seal famous first major championship

Shane Lowry captured the imagination of his Irish fans with a stunning victory to win The Open Championship and clinch his first major title.

The 32-year-old hails from Clara some 160 miles south of Royal Portrush across the border, and enjoyed a passionate and ferocious support from a partisan crowd who roared him home from start to finish amid one of the greatest atmospheres ever witnessed in Open history.

Only on the first hole did Lowry look in trouble as he began his round with a bogey, giving Tommy Fleetwood a sniff of a challenge, but from there on no one was able to get close to the Irishman and he eventually held off his English playing partner to claim a six-shot victory and spark wild celebrations on the 18th green. 

Fleetwood clinched his joint-best finish in a major but rued what could have been after failing to take his chances early on, while Tony Finau rose through the leaderboard with a supreme par round of 71 in tdreadful conditions to take third place. Re-live the action below.

Welcome to The Independent's live coverage of the final round at The Open, which gets underway imminently as Irishman Shane Lowry looks to defend a four-shot lead to claim his first major on home soil.

 

It was a famous day at Royal Portrush on Saturday as Lowry broke the course record with a supreme eight-under-par round of 63, giving him a healthy lead over his nearest challenger in Tommy Fleetwood. The pair will head out last at 1:47pm, though tee times have already been brought forward by an hour due to the threat of bad weather and rain and high winds are expected throughout today's round.

 

With Ashton Turner set to get the round underway at 7:32am, let's not waste any time as the fourth and final round of th1 148th Open Championship begins.

We're expecting rainfall today at Portrush, probably in the afternoon when the leaders head out onto the course, winds could reach up to 35mph, but are expected to be in the region of 20mph regardless.

Both head left off the tee but avoid the long grass, Stanley finishes in the second cut but has a decent lay for his approach to the green.

Eddie Pepperell's completed something of a recovery following two bogeys on the first two holes. Birdies on three, five and now six put him 1-under for the day and (+4) for the tournament.
