The Open 2019: 16 golfing terms you need to know

If you're a person with ears in Northern Ireland over the next few days, you're about to hear a lot about birdies and eagles, pars and putts.

But what's it all about?

Here's a quick round up of all the golfing lingo you need to know to bluff your way through The Open at Portrush.

The scores

Par: This one's a biggie. It's the abbreviation for ‘professional average result’ and means the standard score for a hole or an entire course, which sets out the number of shots a professional golfer should take to hole the ball or complete the round. Clever, eh?

Birdie:  This term's used when a hole is played one stroke better than the expected standard - in 'par' terms, it's one under par.

Eagle: Next up is the eagle, when a hole is completed in two strokes under par.

Albatross: Here's the top one. It's the score given for a hole that has been completed three strokes under par.

Hole-in-one:  This is pretty rare, when a player hits the ball directly into the hole from their first shot.

Bogey: Not so good. A bogey is a hole played one stroke over par. It gets worse though, and players can end up with a double bogey (two over par), a triple bogey (three over) or worse. It's not unheard of for players to get a bogey five.

The shots

Chip:  This is a short shot to play the ball onto the green and as near to the hole as possible.

Drive: A long tee shot played with a wood or driver.

Pitch:  A short shot, longer than a chip to send the ball towards the target accurately.

Putt:  A shot played on the green with the intention of getting the ball in the hole.

The course

Fairway:  This is where golfers should aim to stay — it's the short grass between the tee and the putting green.

Flag:  These mark out the holes on the course.

Rough:  The longer and coarser grass at either side of the fairway that is best avoided.

Green:  The specially prepared grass surface around the hole where golfers try to putt the ball.

Tee:  The part of the course where you start each hole. It also refers to the peg players set their balls on to tee off.

And listen out for this one if you're in the crowd...

Fore:  This is a shout made by golfers as a warning when it's possible a ball may be heading for spectators.
