The one thing Spurs star Son Heung-min did that impressed Roy Hodgson and it was not his goals

Son Heung-min was undoubtedly the star of the show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The South Korean bagged two goals in a stunning first half that wrapped up the three points before half-time.

He fired home from inside the box after latching onto a ball from Toby Alderweireld, before volleying home a Serge Aurier cross at the back post.

They were the frontman's first two goals of the season and came in Tottenham's best display of the season.

It is no surprise, given Mauricio Pochettino's insistence that the closing of the European transfer window "unsettled" his side, with question marks over the futures of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, that once the window closed, the Spurs team started firing on all cylinders.

Son will take the plaudits for his goals, but there was a moment during the match that Roy Hodgson focused on during his post-match press conference.

When asked if it showed the sort of quality his Palace side were up against that Spurs scored four and Harry Kane did not get any of them, he said: "Well, they have other good players in the team and I have to say Son's performance in the first half was outstanding."

But something else caught Hodgson's eye.

"It was also interesting in the last minutes of the game he was the one sprinting back into position to try and stop us scoring a goal," he said.

"I can't speak for Mauricio Pochettino, but if I had a player do what Son did today I would be really delighted. Luckily for Tottenham they don't just have the one, they have several players who have goals in them and who have great passing ability."

And Hodgson reserved praise for the centre-back pairing of Alderweireld and Vertonghen too.

"I thought technically they were very good and the two centre-backs, the quality of their passing was really outstanding, but they probably won't get too much credit for it because centre-backs don't usually get credit for their passing ability."
