The one thing Manchester parents put in their kids' Christmas stockings

For most kids stockings are a key part of Christmas - often the first thing they'll set eyes on as proof that Father Christmas has been.

While gifts have become more and more elaborate over the years, there's one thing that most parents say they always put inside their child's stocking - and that's some good old traditional chocolate coins.

The chocolate coin giving is said to be inspired by the deeds of Saint Nicholas in the fourth century, with chocolate coins introduced some time after chocolate came to Europe in the sixteenth century.

The Jewish festival of Hanukkah – a festival of light held in December, also features the giving of coins to children.

Judging by what parents told us, it's certainly a tradition that's not going away anytime soon.

Asking families on our Manchester Family Facebook page : "Is there one thing that goes inside your child's stocking every Christmas?", dozens of parents responded, with the majority saying 'chocolate coins'.

"Always chocolate coins!" said Debbie McEvoy, while Hayley Cahill said: "Chocolate coins & a comic".

And there were plenty of other items that people said they put alongside the coins, with everything from bath bombs and socks to satsumas, sweets and even slime.

Some mums told us how they now give their kids what they were given as a child.

"Matey bubble bath. My mum did it every year with ours and now I put it in my son's," said Becky Lowry.

And Kelly Orme added: "Chocolate coins, satsuma and a massive tube of Smarties. Exactly the same as I got every year!"
