The one thing holidaymakers won't want to see on their boarding pass

As the UK continues its route out of the Covid recovery roadmap, travel restrictions are slowly being lifted and holidaymakers can once again start planning trips abroad.

While jetsetters will be eager to get away for a well-deserved break, one thing nobody will have missed is the dreaded sight of a long queue at airport security.

Holidaymakers planning on a trip to the USA will be well-aware of the additional entry requirements needed to get into the country as most visitors need to apply for a Electronic System for Travel Authorisation visa.

The US has not yet announced what the Covid requirements will be for Brits entering the country, but one thing visitors won't want to see when UK nationals can eventually start holidaying across the Atlantic again is SSSS printed on their boarding pass.

This code stands for Secondary Security Screening Selection and passengers with this on their boarding pass will have been selected by TSA's secure flight system for an enhanced security screening.

Travellers selected for the checks will spend additional time at the TSA security checkpoints - and could receive additional questioning about their plans while in the country, an additional bag search and a full body pat-down.

The TSA introduced its Secure Flight programme in 2010 to increase security measures for people entering the US.

Anyone who features on a watchlist will always need to go through the additional security checks - but it can also be randomly assigned to any passengers entering the US.

Certain factors can increase the likelihood that you will be selected for the extra check such as booking last-minute flights, if you're coming from a country that has been identified as 'high-risk' - or if you only have a one-way ticket.

After you complete the additional security check, the TSA agent will need to fill in a form - and the time it takes can be dependent on a variety of factors, such as how quickly TSA staff operate, whether anything needs double-checking or if an additional agent needs to assist with the screening.
