The One Show’s Roman Kemp compares Jubilee Buckingham Palace after party to Watford nightclub

The Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, celebrating 70 years of the Queen’s reign, saw parties take place up and down the country - both on the street and in more private locations. But perhaps no one enjoyed a more surreal event than Capital FM host Roman Kemp.

The 29-year-old spent much of last Saturday (4 June) co-hosting the Platinum Party at the Palace coverage. And on his return to presenting duties on the BBC’s The One Show, he boasted about attending the after-party in Buckingham Palace itself.

You might think that royal parties are far removed from the events attended by your average Brit. But Roman offered some fascinating insight by revealing that things may be more similar than you’d expect.

Opening up the programme, co-host Alex Jones was keen to find out all the gossip: “And welcome back Roman Kemp. Now then Roman, you were busy last weekend, you did a brilliant job by the way, backstage at the concert. How was it? You were the man with all the goss I hear.”

Roman, unable to keep the smile off his face, revealed: “Yeah, well I was lucky enough to kind of slip into the after-party of the Platinum Party at the Palace which did mean that we got to go inside Buckingham Palace for an after-party.” To which Alex exclaimed: “Hang on - what?”

“Yeah, I know, that’s a big drop there already,” continued Kemp, “with the royals, but the best thing about it was that, you’d think that at the end of a party at the Palace, they’d slowly and cautiously usher everyone out really nicely. They don’t, they just switch the lights on.

“It’s exactly the same thing that they do in Destiny Nightclub in Watford. It's the end of the night - you’re out! And I liked it, I was here for it.”

Roman also said he “felt very regal” while indulging in the food and drink on offer. The former I’m a Celebrity star had already opened up on how he suffered an awkward moment with the Duchess of Cambridge during the after-party.

Roman revealed that the day after the party he bumed into the royal. "I saw her and she said, 'you look great' and I said to her 'wow, yeah you look really fit!'"

He then revealed how he tried to claw it back, saying: "'No not like that!' Then I went, 'you look amazing.'" Luckily for Roman, he said the Duchess laughed and thanked him for his compliment.
