The One Show's Alex Jones tempts fate with Euro 2020 blunder as Jermaine Jenas steps in

Alex Jones risked putting the mockers on England and Scotland's Euro 2020 chances as she made a sweeping and incorrect remark on Monday's edition of The One Show and was swiftly corrected by co-host Jermaine Jenas.

Despite losing 1-0 to Italy on Sunday, Robert Page's Wales advanced through to the knockout stages of the Euros, finishing second in Group A.

But at the start of Monday's One Show on BBC1, Welsh star Alex informed viewers that all three of the home nations were through, hours before England' s place was confirmed by way of standings in other groups and with Scotland needing a result against Croatia on Tuesday night.

Sitting next to former Newcastle midfielder turned TV presenter and pundit Jermaine, she said: "The Home Nations! I mean that's good because they're all through it seems!"

Interrupting to clarify matters, Jermaine responded: "Nearly. You were doing so well there Alex.

"Basically, England are going to go through; Wales are through, you'll be pleased to hear, but Scotland have got a bit of a game to come up against Croatia and it's just got more difficult.

Jermaine's closing words were in reference to Scotland player and fan favourite Billy Gilmour testing positive for coronavirus, with England's Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell also in isolation after coming into 'close contact' with him after Friday's match.

As luck would have it, Alex proved to be right about England being through as standings in other groups sealed their place in the next round after Monday's fixtures, before they take on the Czech Republic at Wembley.

The games saw Ukraine and Finland finish third in groups on three points, meaning that if England, who are currently second in Group D, drop to third they would still go through

They need to beat the Czechs to win Group D but and avoid defeat to finish in the top 2 but fears are them not making the next stage have not been put to bed.
