The One Show: John Legend 'frustrated' about gun laws in the US

John Legend was a guest on The One Show this evening (May 26) and the legendary singer-songwriter used his appearance to vent his frustration with the gun laws in his home country.

The show dived straight into the horrific event that took place in Texas this week. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed in a school shooting on Tuesday at Robb Elementary School.

The children who died were aged between seven and 10. It is the deadliest shooting at a US primary school since the Sandy Hook shooting a decade ago.

Legend, who won the United Nations Human Rights’ High Note Global Prize last year said: "Once again our hearts are broken. The story keeps repeating, we keep having mass shootings. As someone who dropped my own kids off at an elementary school, it's just heartbreaking to know that parents did that with their kids and then they didn't come home.

"I am frustrated by the political inaction and that we're just allowing these guns to continue to spread and not do anything about it." he added.

The 43-year-old criticised the Texas Republican senator Ted Cruz on Twitter earlier today after a video of the senator confronting a British reporter surfaced on the internet. The senator was asked why school shootings happen so often in the US.

"Do you wanna talk about how we could have prevented the horror that played out across the street? Look the killer entered here the same way the killer entered Santa Fe, through a back door, an unlocked back door." said the senator.

Legend retweeted Mr Cruz's comments and said: "Dear God. The idiocy. No gun reform. Just door reform from Ted Cruz."

John Legend was joined on The One Show by EastEnders star Gillian Wright and BBC Radio 1's Greg James.

The magazine-style evening show tackles the latest issues facing the UK using a mix of interviews and reports by regular contributors. Tonight's episode was hosted by Alex Jones and Ronan Keating, who spoke to Wright about the significance of her EastEnders storyline, while BBC Radio 1's James shared details about the upcoming BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend festival and Legend spoke about the latest in his career.

The show was pulled from the air on Tuesday (May 24) due to a schedule shake-up with The RHS Chelsea Flower Show. But luckily no pollen got in the way of tonight's show.
