The One Show hosts gobsmacked as Downton Abbey star makes brutal dig at Boris Johnson

The One Show hosts were left speechless after Dan Stevens dished out brutal criticism of Boris Johnson on live TV.

Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas were joined by the Downton Abbey actor on the BBC show, as they chatted with him about his new drama called Gaslit, which also stars Julia Roberts and Sean Penn.

The film follows the Watergate Scandal of the 70s, with US president Nixon forced to resign amid the scandal, whilst Dan plays one of the lawyers involved at the time, he also compared the film to the current state of British politics.

The duo were soon stunned into silence as Dan made a dig at the Prime Minister after he and Chancellor Rishi Sunak were found to have broken the law after receiving fixed penalty notices amid the Partygate scandal, writes The Mirror.

Explaining the story, he said: "What you’ve got is a criminal for a leader who is wrapped in a messy war, embroiled in a stupid scandal and surrounded by ambitious idiots and really should resign," before taking a brief pause.

"I'm sorry that’s the intro to Boris Johnson," he then added, leaving both Alex and Jermaine unsure what to say.

Jermaine turned his head to laugh whilst Alex sat there in silence as audible gasps could be heard in the room.

Viewers tuning into the BBC show absolutely loved the comment.

"Absolute class, take a bow son, take a bow #JohnsonOut #TheOneShow," one wrote, as another added on Twitter : "Someone, Buy that man a drink!! #TheOneShow #ThePartysOver."

A third penned: "Absolutely brilliant, I don't think #TheOneShow were expecting that lol."

"Give that man a standing ovation!!! @thatdanstevens speaking the truth on #TheOneShow," a fourth shared.

The tweets continued, with one writing: " @thatdanstevens being totally awesome on #TheOneShow - first he’s dressed for Ukraine & then he makes a fabulous dig at @BorisJohnson pointing out his moral bankruptcy. @jjenas8 face was fantastic."

"He couldn’t have chosen a better intro! Well done @thatdanstevens #theoneshow," another wrote.

One penned: "The gasps just made it all the better! Hats off to you Dan! #TheOneShow."

Mr Johnson has offered a "full apology" over Partygate, but has insisted he won't resign.

"I have paid the fine and I once again offer a full apology and in a spirit of openness and humility I want to be completely clear about what happened on that day," he said.

"It did not occur to me that this might have been a breach of the rules but of course the police have found otherwise and I fully respect the outcome of their investigation."
