So, has The One Show got what it takes to become a Nationwide-style early evening anchor for the BBC1 schedule? It is only one show into a month long pilot run, but could The One Show be a worthy successor to Nationwide?
BBC1 controller Peter Fincham is trying out The One Show as a possible long runner to go in the tricky 7pm slot against Emmerdale. If it works, he's in clover. If not - well, it's Davina time again.
One Show co-presenter Adrian Chiles, in a MediaGuardian interview yesterday, was keen to play down comparisons with Nationwide, perhaps understandably.
"I'm desperately close to 40 and I can barely remember what Nationwide was like," Chiles said. "But it wasn't lots of beautifully crafted films from all the BBC's various departments, which is what The One Show will be. It was more 'Let's go live to Norwich'." Did the show live up to Chiles' billing?
MediaGuardian's reviewer Steve Hewlett wasn't that impressed with The One Show's first outing - but is willing to give it some benefit of the doubt. Fair comment?
