BBC The One Show studio fills with gasps as guest Dan Stevens takes unexpected swipe at Boris Johnson

Viewers of The One Show were left shocked after a guest made some scathing comments about Boris Johnson. Actor Dan Stevens made an appearance on the BBC show on Wednesday, April 13.

The former Downton Abbey star was promoting his forthcoming series, Gaslit, which is about the Watergate scandal of 1972. Speaking to presenters Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas, Dan was asked about what the series was about - but didn't exactly give the response they were expecting.

"Well, what you’ve got is a criminal for a leader who is wrapped in a messy war, embroiled in a stupid scandal and surrounded by ambitious idiots and really should resign," he said, before pausing briefly. He then continued: "I’m sorry that’s the intro to Boris Johnson."

Gasps could be heard around the studio and Alex and Jermaine briefly fell silent before Dan went on to explain the plot of the series. Dan's comments follow the news that the Prime Minister and Chancellor Rishi Sunak are being served with fines for breaching lockdown laws during the Covid pandemic. Top Welsh Tories have given Boris Johnson their full backing despite mounting public anger over lockdown fines - read about that here.

Viewers who watched the interview went straight to social media to comment on the unexpected moment. Twitter user @Eggieatcave wrote: "Dan Stevens on the #TheOneShow firstly wearing the colours of Ukraine, then has a dig at Boris, brilliant, take a bow #partygate."

Another Twitter user, @MondoMoody, wrote: "You have to watch tonight's #TheOneShow to get the truth from an actor who's got the guts to say it on the #BBC #DanStevens is a star ... #Gaslit #Partygate."

Kate Rhodes wrote: "I just nearly spat out my cup of tea at @thatdanstevens on #TheOneShow describing Boris Johnson. So funny. Good on you!" George H Riddell wrote: "That was great! Got to love it when people do stuff like that live #TheOneShow."
