The one rule change that will be of huge benefit to Notts County in the National League

Notts County are gearing up for their maiden voyage into the National League - and they will hugely benefit from one key rule.

The transfer window will not apply to the Magpies meaning they are free to sign players as and when they want.

Previously, the National League had emulated the EFL by restricting clubs' business to the summer and January.

But that all changed in 2016, when the National League abolished the window which was seen as a positive move.

Notts County's out of contract players set to receive letters about their futures

It means this season, if Notts were to encounter an injury crisis that deprived them of several top players, it would enable them to sign cover either permanently or on loan.

Halifax proved how valuable it is when they signed Devante Rodney from Salford at the end of February as they looked to beef up their attacking options.

Rodney signed on a month's loan initially, but that was extended until the end of the season.

It proved a smart bit of business by the former Notts manager Jamie Fullarton as Rodney scored seven goals during his time at the club helping them achieve a comfortable mid-table finish.

Loan rules still apply however meaning that Notts can only name five players in a matchday squad.

However, like permanent signings, they will be able to make loan additions as and when they please.

What happens to Notts County's out of contract players?

If they had been in the Football League, that wouldn't have been possible as the emergency loan window was also scrapped.

That huge pressure on EFL clubs to get their recruitment spot on in the summer and the New Year.
