The one Rangers positive from Tuesday calamity as promising star steps up injury comeback

Alex Lowry has stepped up his bid to return to Rangers senior contention in one positive of an otherwise calamitous Tuesday night for the Ibrox club.

The Scotland youth international featured for the Govan side's Lowland League 'B' team against Spartans, achieving a 3-0 win. Ross McCausland put them ahead before half-time and Robbie Ure's goal after the restart put them in a commanding position. Connor Allan rounded off scoring to give them three points.

Lowry has been with the first-team in 2022 after stellar performances last year in the youth ranks, making his debut and scoring against Stirling Albion in the Scottish Cup just under eight months ago. Senior manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst rates him highly but has confirmed he is back with the youngsters in order to build fitness. He has missed some of pre-season through injury but is now upping the ante in his attempts to play on the biggest stages again.

New signing from Millwall Zak Lovelace and midfielder Charlie McCann were also included in a strong side selected by David McCallum.

None of them were out in Belgium as their experienced peers were humbled 2-0 by Union-Saint Gilloise in Champions League third qualifying round first leg action.

It leaves Rangers' chances of a multi-million prize pot and getting some of the world's biggest teams to Ibrox hanging by a thread ahead of next week's return leg.
