The one person who helped 'furious' Prince Harry cope with devastating army setback

A royal expert has described how a 'furious' Prince Harry coped with a devastating setback during his army career.

During his 10 years in the military the young prince was posted to Afghanistan twice.

However, his first tour in the notorious Helmand province was cut short in 2008 when his position was leaked by foreign media.

Prince Harry was forced to withdraw for his team's protection and a royal expert claims there was only one person who could calm him down, Mirror Online reports.

Speaking at the time, Helmand task force commander Brigadier Andrew Mackay said: "The decision to withdraw Harry from operations was not made lightly and was given careful consideration.

"At the time of the decision, he was deployed in the field, conducting operations against the Taliban and we, therefore, had to consider not just the consequences for him personally but those that he was serving alongside.

"As a Forward Air Controller, he has been deployed in the field for his entire time. More recently, he took part in a major operation to disrupt Taliban lines of communication.

"In doing so, he has shared the same risks, endured the same austerity and undergone the same moments of fears and euphoria that are part of conducting operations here."

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe said this was one of the most difficult times in Prince Harry's life.

Speaking to Yahoo's The Royal Box, he said: "One of the other real lows in Harry’s life was when he was dragged out of Afghanistan because his secret deployment had hit the papers which meant he had to come home.

"He was absolutely furious."

He added his then girlfriend Chelsy Davy was the only one who could help him get through this difficult time.

Mr Larcombe continues: "Where did he go? Straight to Botswana with Chelsy Davy. Straight there and spent a couple of weeks there.

"Almost like - it’s where he goes when there’s steam coming out of his ears to calm down."

Botswana has always been a special place for Harry, and he first visited shortly after the death of his mother Princess Diana.

Speaking in an interview, Harry said: "I first came [to Africa] in 1997, straight after my mum died.

"My dad told my brother and me to pack our bags — we were going to Africa to get away from it all."

Since then Harry has visited regularly both personally and for official royal duties, including with his wife Meghan.
