The once-abandoned iconic hotel that’s hosting a pop-up cinema for Christmas

An iconic city hotel is opening its doors to screen two festive films this Christmas.

The Westgate Hotel in Newport had been left abandoned for almost two decades, until earlier this year is, and will now welcome guests for seasonal screenings.

The hotel has been given a new lease of life by The Newport Rising team, who've used the venue to stage events, including the Newport Rising celebrations and a Chartist-themed graphic novel book launch, as well as plans to host a New Year's Eve party at the venue.

There will be two films being shown at the venue's impressive 19th century ballroom, and guests are invited to arrive early as there will be a fully licensed bar selling drinks and cinema-style snacks.

On Friday, December 6 , the Johnny Depp film Edward Scissorhands will be shown, starting from 7pm, while Bill Murray's Scrooged is planned for Saturday, December 21 , at 7pm.

Both films cost £5 per ticket with all funds raised going towards Newport Rising Festival 2020.

Event organiser David Daniel said: "Anyone that has visited the Westgate recently knows how special the venue is, there's a real atmosphere in the building, especially the ballroom.

"We can't wait to share some alternative Christmas classics on the big screen there and even better that we'll be helping to raise funds for Newport Rising Festival ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations in the hotel too."

Take a look inside the iconic Westgate Hotel:

A building steeped in history, it was recently used for Newport Rising Festival , an event used to mark 180 years since the Chartist Uprising in the city, where 22 men were killed

Led by John Frost, the Chartists marched to Newport to fight for better voting rights as per their six-point charter.

It was the last large-scale armed rebellion against authority in Great Britain.

Tickets for the cinema screenings, which cost £5 each, can be bought from the Newport Rising website .
