Swansea University is turning the old home of Happy Home Furnishers, which occupied a city centre unit for nearly three decades, into the home of a new exhibition venue.
The furniture store had been at 21-22 Castle Street for 27 years, but closed in August 2018 and has since relocated to Phoenix Retail Park in Llansamlet.
Since then, the huge unit in the centre of Swansea has been vacant, with permission sought to change the use of the building from retail into food and drink use back in October 2018.
But now Swansea University has stepped in to fill the unit instead, with its 'Oriel Science' branding already erected along with posters teasing its upcoming arrival.
Oriel Science is a Swansea University project that takes the university’s research and packages it into inspiring and interactive exhibits designed to nurture curiosity and showcase it to the community.

A Swansea University spokesman said: “Oriel Science is delighted to be returning to the heart of the city centre with a new exhibition venue that will showcase Swansea University’s world-class research.
“It will build on the success of the pop-up venue which welcomed almost 16,000 visitors during its 100 opening days in 2016-17 and hope it will inspire a younger generation to become future engineers, doctors and innovators.
“The venue will be open to visitors of all ages and we look forward to welcoming everyone in a safe way with social distancing measures in place.
“There will be more information to follow in due course.”
