The Old Firm TV gaffe that would break the internet if it happened today

For fans of a certain age it's a moment that lives long in the memory.

For Celtic supporters, a moment of joy to be celebrated with the passion of a goal and for Rangers fans to hold their heads in heartbroken dismay.

25 years ago today, STV staple Scotsport was in the middle of live coverage of a crucial Old Firm clash at Ibrox when a brilliant goal set up by Brian Laudrup and finished by David Robertson equalled the scores - except it didn't.

The goal was legitimate and should have stood but it was ruled offside, a situation that legendary commentator Gerry McNee and his STV colleagues failed to spot.

To be fair to McNee, he's explaining the goal and looking back at the replays when the cancellation occurs and clearly should have been made aware of what had unfolded by someone else on the production team.

It took five and a half minutes before the raging former Sunday Mail columnist made a terse statement as the cameras cut to the Ibrox scoreboard for the correct information.

McNee said: "We have to correct that scoreline.

"In fact, Celtic are still leading by a goal to nil.

"While we were in the replays and offside flag had gone up."

Moving swiftly on then...

Luckily for STV, the moment was largely forgotten in the aftermath after in incident packed match that is still fondly remembered as one of the greatest ever clashes between the bitter Glasgow rivals.
