The old Afan Lido site in Aberavon is to be covered with 137 new homes

Nearly 140 homes are set to be built on the site of the former Afan Lido leisure centre which was once one of Port Talbot's most popular attractions.

The Aberavon attraction, which was one of Wales' first purpose-built leisure centres, was hugely popular among generations of children after opening in 1965. But a blaze at the site more than 10 years ago resulted in its demolition back in 2011.

Now, Neath Port Talbot Council has announced new plans that would see 137 new homes replace the former leisure complex. The council explained that under a provisional agreement, Persimmon Homes West Wales would be its preferred development partner in the project to transform the seafront site.

A planning application is currently being prepared which explains that the development would see the creation of two, three and four-bedroom houses, as well as a range of two-bedroom flats. Providing planning permission is granted, work at the three-hectare site would be expected to start during the first half of 2022, with the homes going on sale shortly after.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Councillor Rob Jones, called it a "really exciting development" at one of the county's "most attractive" locations.

He said: "“Persimmon Homes West Wales has been consulting with the local community about its proposals for this site and subject to these plans successfully going through the relevant processes it could be a really exciting development in one of our most attractive locations."

Aberavon, including the old Lido, was once one of the premier seafront hotspots in Wales, with thousands flocking there from all over to enjoy a host of attractions.

Since 2001, the council has been carrying out a major regeneration of Aberavon seafront with more than £20million being spent on new attractions, the upgrading of public facilities and developments such as the Afan Lido replacement, the Aberavon Leisure and Fitness Centre.

Work began last month on the new splash pad at the seafront which will be replacing the former popular children's attraction. The new facility will be made up of more than 30 water features, including fountains, jets and 'waterfalls'.
