The official handball rule as Man City fans fume at VAR decision against Dinamo Zagreb

Manchester City fans were furious to see their side denied a penalty against Dinamo Zagreb after Kevin Theophile-Catherine clearly handled the ball in the area during their Champions League clash.

City were dominant at the Etihad Stadium but couldn't finish their chances in the first-half and the teams entered the interval level.

Fans were furious after being denied a seemingly clear cut penalty after the Zagreb defender handled the ball with his arm in an unnatural position.

Referee Serdar Gözübüyük waved away the claims and VAR adjudged that there wasn't a clear and obvious error.

As per the official Laws of the Game via the International Football Association Board (IFAB), handball is no longer based on the offence being deliberate.

For example, Gabriel Jesus' goal against Tottenham earlier in the season was ruled out after the ball had struck Aymeric Laporte on the arm despite being by his side.

The rules state a penalty will be awarded if the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacker's hand or arm, hence why the Brazilian's strike was chalked off.

However, they also state a penalty will be awarded if the ball touches a player's hand/arm which has made their silhouette unnaturally bigger.

Therefore, City fans are right to be angry with Theophile-Catherine handling the ball with his arm way away from his side.

BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton agreed with their claims, questioning why the referee didn't give the spot kick, even without VAR intervention.

"I honestly don't get it," he said. "His arm is out for his body.

"I went to Stockley Park for the VAR meeting and the talk was about the silhouette position.

"His arms are out, it hit's him on the arm, I don't know why he hasn't given it in real time.

"Why haven't they checked it?"
