The Offenders film lorries trapped by sit-down protest outside police station

Two lorries were trapped on a Bristol city centre road due to a sit-down protest near a police station.

HGV driver Andrew Jones, supplying equipment for a new Stephen Merchant series, pleaded with protesters to let him through Rupert Street so he could reach Lloyds Amphitheatre.

But organisers refused, saying it would defeat the point of their protest if they let traffic through. With only a few remaining at around 1am, they eventually moved to the side of the road so the lorries could pass.

Mr Jones had a much-delayed journey back to Bridgend, but he waited calmly on Haymarket for hours and said he understood people's right to protest.

Campaigners at the city's fourth Kill the Bill protest were sitting outside of Bridewell Police Station, where violent clashes broke out last Friday and the previous Sunday.

People marched through Bristol for almost an hour, looping past Castle Park and the Bearpit before reaching the police station.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police said that officers would engage with people.

They said on Tuesday night: "A number of the protesters are now in Bridewell Street and some have sat down. It continues to be a peaceful protest and our police liaison teams are continuing to engage with those there."

Officers worked with protesters throughout the peaceful event, which included two hours of speeches at College Green.

Changes to coronavirus lockdown rules that came into force on Monday mean protesting is now an exception to the ban on large gatherings.

Police said their approach to this evening’s event would be "low-key", with neighbourhood policing teams leading the effort to facilitate the demo.

Officers were also in regular police uniform - rather than riot gear.
