The numbers are in on Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant’s contract extension

The Miami Dolphins agreed to a 4-year contract extension with wide receiver/return man Jakeem Grant early Wednesday morning, an intriguing move for the Dolphins — mainly because they’re paying Grant for what they feel he can be versus the production he’s created through his first three years. A healthy Grant last year looked to be a dynamic complimentary receiver despite his diminutive stature, logging 14 receptions for 228 yards (16.3 yards per catch) and one touchdown in 10 games before succumbing to an Achilles/calf injury that ended his season prematurely.

Grant’s true value lies in the return game — he ran back 18 kicks for 535 yards (a career high 29.7 yards per return) in 2018.

Which is worth what, exactly? Now we know. The Dolphins’ extension with Grant is for four seasons and worth up to $24M, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.

Casual football fans may scoff at the price of extending Grant, but Dolphins fans — like the front office — know full well what he’s capable of when healthy, making this a reasonable investment in a player that is really just scratching the surface of how good he can be as a receiver.
