The number plate changes in a matter of weeks likely to affect car prices

Drivers are being warned of number plate changes that could affect car prices.

The new plates will incorporate previous changes made in 2021 which dictate that number plates have to adhere to new rules, and are designed to be easier to read by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system used by police.

Those being introduced from March 1 will feature a new “22” registration tag, while those released in September will have a new “72-plate.

The plates are made from a tougher material, making them more resistant to abrasion and other damage, and can now only display solid black lettering.

Lettering can still be perspex or acrylic, provided it meets all other requirements, but two tone plates using different shades to create a 3D or 4D effect have now been banned.

The new plates also have to include the supplier’s business name and postcode, along with the name of the number plate manufacturer and the new standard.

And drivers are being warned the changes could lead to rising and falling prices in the car market.

Sometimes, car dealerships will get rid of old stock at discounted prices in February and August, but prices for new plated cars can be higher.
