The number of pupils and schools affected by coronavirus cases in Swansea

Hundreds of pupils across Swansea are now self-isolating as a result of positive Covid infections in their schools.

Around 450 pupils have been told to remain home after positive tests for coronavirus, in three schools. They are Gowerton Comprehensive, YG Gwyr, and Pen y Fro Primary in Dunvant.

A spokesman for Swansea Council said: "There are approximately 450 pupils currently isolating in line with current national guidance. Affected pupils will use blended learning until they can return to school".

The total figure for the number of pupils who have had to self-isolate since Easter is likely to be much higher, however, as since the Easter holidays ended at the beginning of April, there have been 11 schools in Swansea which have seen cases.

At YG Gwyr, all Year 8 pupils have remained at home this week, in addition to all those pupils who used one particular school bus service. Those affected at Gowerton, which is located a short distance away from YG Gwyr, are in Year 7.

The precautions come as latest figures reveal no new coronavirus deaths have been reported in Wales in in the past two days, and new case levels remain very low. Only 35 new coronavirus cases were reported by Public Health Wales on Wednesday, April 28. The last time case levels in Wales were as low was August last year.

Yesterday, the doctor in charge of the vaccine programme in Wales said she was confident the target of having all eligible adults vaccinated by the end of July was on track.

Dr Gill Richardson said 90% of people over the age of 60 in Wales had been vaccinated, 95% of over 80s and 70% of people aged between 40 to 49 had also been vaccinated - some of the best rates in the UK.
