The number of points Leeds United need from their final 10 Championship games to earn promotion

With a favourable fixture list and the team in good form playing attractive football, Leeds United - along with league leaders West Brom - are odds-on favourites to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

After 15 long, long years, mostly filled with disappointment, Leeds fans will be forgiven for being reluctant to get carried away, but it looks as though it might actually happen this time.

All they need to do is win just over half of the 10 games left of the regular Championship season.

Leeds are comfortably in the automatic promotion places with 68 points - five more than third-placed Fulham.

Clubs finishing second in the second tier of English football have done so with an average of 85.2 points since three points for a win was introduced in 1981/82.

That’s 17 points fewer than Leeds have now, the equivalent of 5.7 wins.

There have been seasons when Marcelo Bielsa’s side wouldn't need anywhere near that amount though.

In 1982/83 the team finishing in second, Wolves, won just 75 points.

Charlton finished second in 1985/86 with just 77 points, while in 1986/87 and 1987/88 Portsmouth and Aston Villa ended the season with 78 points.

However, eight sides have finished second with as many as 90 points in the past.

Brighton finished second with 93 points in 2016/17, as did Burnley in 2013/14 - the joint highest totals of any side finishing second.

Leicester won 92 points in 2002/03, while West Brom, Blackburn and Middlesbrough won 91 in 2009/10, 2000/01 and 1997/98 respectively, and Cardiff and Sheffield United won 90 in 2017/18 and 2005/06 respectively.
