The number of people now vaccinated against coronavirus in the South West

More than ten per cent of the population in the South West has now been vaccinated against coronavirus, according to the latest government figures.

A total of 5,861,351 people have now received their first vaccination against Covid in the UK, with 468,617 people having had the second jab.

In the South West of England, 571,449 people have received the first dose of the vaccination, with 53,312 getting the second and final jab, representing 10.16 per cent of the region's population.

The South West of England remains behind the majority of regions in England, with the Midlands reporting the best vaccination cumulative total so far.

The Midlands is the region with the highest number of vaccinations delivered so far, with 969,979 people having received the first jab.

London, in contrast, has administered the least jabs, with only 545,815 having received one of the approved vaccinations against the virus.

A total of 33,552 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded across the UK in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 260,098.

There have been 1,348 newly recorded deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test, taking the death toll attributed to the virus to 97,329.
