The number of fines and breaches reported to police over the bank holiday

The number of reported lockdown breaches to Avon and Somerset Police went up by 25 per cent over the bank holiday weekend - but just two fines were given by officers in Bristol.

As of May 8, the force had recorded 18,615 incidents of suspected breaches since the lockdown came in on March 23 - averaging to around 405 recorded breaches every day.

And between Friday and Sunday, the police recorded a total of 1,643 reports of suspected breaches across the force area - taking the daily average to 547 a day, meaning the number of recorded breaches went up by more than 25 per cent.

Over the weekend, concerns were raised about crowds gathering in the Harbourside area on Friday afternoon, with a bar in the area also reopening as a takeaway service.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: "We recorded a total of 1,643 reports of suspected breaches across the force area between Friday and Sunday and issued nine fixed penalty notices."

The statement said five fixed penalty notices were issued in South Gloucestershire, two in Somerset and two in Bristol.

No fixed penalty notices were issued in Bath and North East Somerset over the bank holiday weekend.

The figures come as the fine for lockdown breaches increases on Wednesday to £100.

BristolLive spoke to Bristol PC Ashley Tucker, who says he is attending around two lockdown breach call-outs a day, down from about five daily in the early period of restrictions.

He also revealed the hotspots for breaches and some of people's more bizarre reactions when spotted outside by police.
