The number of fans allowed at Tottenham vs Arsenal in North London Derby confirmed by Government

Arsenal will be allowed to have 2,000 fans attend Emirates Stadium starting from next week's Europa League match against Rapid Vienna, after London was put into tier two of COVID-19 restrictions.

Football fans across the UK have been locked out since March but they can now return in tier 1 and tier 2 areas, with London falling into the latter category.

Tier 2 restrictions mean that 2,000 fans can attend matches following the end of the national lockdown on December 2.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta was asked about the news before it was confirmed during his pre-match Europa League press conference on Wednesday.

"It would depend where we are in terms of the infections but it looks like we're going to be able to host some of our fans in the stadium which is fantastic news," said Arteta.

"We have been working really hard as a club, the club has a really good project and everything is almost ready to try to accommodate everybody in a safe way.

"There are still some details that are not confirmed that makes next week a challenge but the club is trying its best because myself, the players and the staff are all desperate to have them back watching the games."

The news means that Arsenal's first Premier League match after the national lockdown ends will be a north London derby against Tottenham, where 2,000 fans will be allowed to attend.

Arsenal are expected to release an official statement in due course, with the Gunners first team squad currently in Norway ahead of their match against Molde in the Europa League tonight.
