The number of cases of coronavirus in the UK rises to 163

The number of cases of coronavirus in the UK has risen to 163, the Department of Health and Social Care said on Friday (March 6).

The number has increased from 115 cases just one day earlier.

It includes five new patients in Scotland, marking the largest single-day increase for the country so far.

In total, the figure is made up of 147 cases in England, 11 in Scotland, two in Wales and three in Northern Ireland.

To date, more than 20,000 people have been tested for the virus in the UK.

Of those, 634 were tested in Wales.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said it is "now highly likely that the virus is going to spread in a significant way".

He added that officials are ramping up work to prepare for the next "delay" phase of the UK's Coronavirus Action Plan.

The Prime Minister has today pledged £46 million for research into a coronavirus vaccine and rapid diagnostic tests.

He announced the funding during a tour of a Bedfordshire laboratory, where British scientists are working on a quick and cheap way to diagnose the virus.

Mr Johnson said he hoped a vaccine will be ready in about a year.

England's Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty previously said the UK "will not have a vaccine available for the first wave" of a pandemic, but that it is still important to develop one for any future waves.

To date, one person in the UK, a woman in her 70s with underlying health issues, has died as a result of the coronavirus.
