The number of asymptomatic people who tested positive for Covid-19 in one South Ayrshire town

Only one person out of 1,200 who were tested for Covid-19 at a pop-up unit in Girvan was positive over the course of three days.

The single aysmptomatic  case was recorded between November 30 and December 2 at the mobile test site.

The testing unit in the town was established to find out how many asymptomatic cases of the virus were in the area.

A mobile testing unit also ran at Ayr's John Pollock Centre and closed on Monday.

South Ayrshire Council leader Peter Henderson said the result from Girvan demonstrated people were obeying the restrictions.

The Girvan and South Carrick SNP politician said: “It shows people are complying with social distancing. Out of 1,200 people in Girvan only one was positive. That was someone walking about who didn’t know they were asymptomatic.”

Only one case was registered up until Wednesday last week but there may have been others as the testing unit opened until Friday.

The base in Girvan operated from November 30 until December 4 while the John Pollock Centre facility ran between December 5 until December 7.

Councillor Henderson said he had not received an update on the number of positive cases recorded in Ayr yet.

He praised the ambulance service and health staff for their help in operating the walk in and drive through units.

South Ayrshire Council has also been distributing 5,000 coronavirus home testing kits to people who don’t have Covid-19 symptoms.

They are available until 5.30pm on Wednesday December 9 from Kincaidston Bowling Club and Lochside Community Centre in Ayr and Maybole Town Hall.

Councillor Henderson said: “I encourage people to carry out self testing.”

He said “asymptomatic testing is vital to slowing the spread of COVID-19.”

He pointed out it will “help us get back to some sort of form of normality.”
