Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce will be 'very interested' in Netherlands and Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst this summer.
That's the view of pundit Dean Windass, who believes the Magpies boss will be looking to recruit a 'number nine' ahead of the new season.
Callum Wilson enjoyed an impressive start to life at St James' Park despite an injury-hit campaign, comfortably finishing the season as Newcastle's top scorer.
However, United struggled in his absence with Andy Carroll, Dwight Gayle and Joelinton mustering just six goals between them in the Premier League.
The Magpies were linked with a move for Weghorst last year, and the Athletic report the 28-year-old is again a transfer target this summer.
West Ham have also been credited with an interest in the £25m-rated striker who bagged 20 goals in the Bundesliga last season.
Windass believes Bruce always likes his sides to play with a 'big number nine', and is confident Weghorst would prove to be a 'threat' in the Premier League.
He told Transfer Tavern : “He’s a big lad. Steve likes a big number nine; he always has done. I just think that Steve needs a big, fit number nine, Joelinton has struggled with the price-tag.
“Anyone who fills the number nine shirt is up against it with Alan. But he is a threat and Steve likes that, that’s his type of player. Every manager in the world will be looking for players, and Steve will be very interested.”
