The Nottinghamshire village DJ bringing disco happiness to living rooms around the world

DJ Simon Stanford has been bringing disco joy to tens of thousands of locked down living rooms all over the world during the pandemic from his home in a Notts village.

The founder of Discos for Grown Ups has been streaming weekly discos from his home in Blidworth, compete with glitter ball and sparkly jacket as he spins the old-skool vinyl.

But after a year online Simon will be hitting the road this summer to take the pop-up party to real dance floors across the country, including one in his home county.

Simon started Discos For Grown Ups in 2017 after he DJ'd at his own birthday party, playing the best soul, disco and feel-good classics from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

"It was founded after finding there was nowhere to go to have a great night of dancing if you're over 40. Where do you go if you're too old to go clubbing, but you still love to dance?

"I kept getting asked to do friends' parties then I progressed to doing my own nights and playing at festivals in 2018," he said.

During lockdown the weekly online discos went global with thousands dancing in their living rooms all over the world from the live steam on Facebook and YouTube.

"I've now got over 10,000 followers on Facebook plus thousands on YouTube. I get people from all over the world coming to my online discos - LA, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Chile and Denmark," said the ex-record industry executive.

Discos for Grown Ups will be heading to the Belgrave Rooms Ballroom, in Goldsmith Street, Nottingham on Friday July 16, from 8.30pm to midnight.

"Everyone loves to dance, whatever age they are. 'Dress up, glitter up and dance… Why should the kids have all the fun?" said Simon.

Before the pandemic he was holding regular pop-up parties across the UK. He is also the resident vinyl DJ at Chris Evans' Car Fest North and South events.

Early bird tickets are £12.50 (£14 at a later date) available from wegottickets.com/discosforgrownups with a guarantee that refunds will be given if events are cancelled, postponed or rescheduled.
