Here is The Nottinghamian from Thursday, December 1 :

Hello,

Welcome to December. In today's edition we reveal what's happening at a town's former Iceland store, which closed down in January, and report on plans to demolish a village's only pub to make way for new homes.

The festiveness continues with a sneak peek inside Nottingham's Magic Grotto, a pop-up bar, and for younger members of the family we take a look at where you can see Santa.

Plans for former Iceland store revealed

Locals were dismayed when the Beeston branch of Iceland closed down at the start of 2022. It has now been revealed that the premises will open as an Asian supermarket, geared towards the town's huge student population.

Oriental Mart, which has had a presence in Nottingham city centre since 2008, has taken over the property in High Road. Currently undergoing refurbishment, it is set to open early next year.

Thousands of fresh, frozen and dried products will be on sale from Asian countries including China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam. Read the full story here.

Sneak peek inside Magic Grotto

It's certainly beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the pop-up bar. We were treated to a sneak peek at a secret location, deep in a basement of a property in the Lace Market, which has been transformed into a winter wonderland.

Revellers can enjoy festive cocktails and a Christmas tapas menu with pigs in blankets, roast potatoes and gravy, mini Yorkshire puddings with brie or beef and a giant sausage roll that's made for sharing - all to a soundtrack of Chrimbo classics.

The previously unused space was given a magical makeover in the space of just 10 days, with Christmas trees, baubles, neon signs, twinkly lights and presents. Take a look here

Trivia question: How old is the major oak roughly?

The answer to today’s trivia question is at the bottom of the newsletter.

Village's only pub set to be demolished

The Gardeners Inn, in Cossall, closed in February this year (Mandy Jolly)

The only pub in the village of Cossall could soon be controversially knocked down to make way for new housing. The Gardeners Inn shut down in February, with plans to demolish it and build five detached homes.

The pub was previously listed as an asset of community value, a status which meant it was given additional protection against development. But in 2021 it was removed from the list as it was judged that there was no evidence of realistic continued use as a pub.

Despite a significant number of objections planning officers have recommended that Broxtowe Borough Council approves the housing proposals at a planning committee meeting on December 7. Read the full story here.

Where to see Santa

He's making a list, and checking it twice... Santa Claus is coming to town. In fact, he's coming to garden centres, theme parks, a pub, a steam train and even a tattoo studio. Father Christmas is going to be a busy man, flitting to grottos across Nottingham and beyond.

Some of the grottos have to be pre-booked - one has already sold out - so don't leave it too late or your little ones could be disappointed. There will be a chance to meet Santa at White Post Farm and Sundown Adventureland in Notts and over the border at Twinlakes.

Bulwell town centre is one of the few places youngsters will be able to see Santa for free and have their photo taken with him. Find out more here.
