The Nottingham Forest transfer verdict no Reds fan will want to hear

Nottingham Forest could face a fight to hold on to Matty Cash in the summer, according to one of his teammates.

Such has been the Nigel Doughty Academy product’s form at right-back this season, he caught the eye of a number of teams in the January transfer window, with Premier League sides and Italian giants AC Milan believed to be circling.

Cash put pen to paper on a new long-term contract at the City Ground back in November and has said he remains fully committed to the club.

But as his star continues to rise, midfielder Ben Watson says he would not be surprised if the defender is the subject of more speculation when the window opens again.

“It was no surprise there was interest in him in January, and no doubt there will be interest in the summer as well,” said Watson.

“He’s young and it’s his first season playing that position, so he’s going to get better.

“He’s a good kid and he’s willing to learn, so he can keep improving.”

Cash has been converted from a midfielder to his defensive role under head coach Sabri Lamouchi.

Improving defensively, he also remains an attacking threat when able to push forward and scored his third goal of the season in stunning style to clinch a 2-2 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Watson feels the full-back post suits the 22-year-old, who has become an integral part of the back line and continues to keep former Arsenal man Carl Jenkinson out of the starting line-up.

“He’s done great in a new position and it was a fantastic goal from him,” Watson said of Cash’s wonder strike at The Hawthorns.

“He’s got that in his locker. Technically he’s very good.

“He’s a modern-day full-back.”
