The Northman: Watch first trailer for new blockbuster filmed on north coast and Torr Head

The first trailer for new Hollywood film The Northman has been released, showcasing the dramatic landscape of Northern Ireland's north coast.

The film, from director Robert Eggers, was shot in Belfast and areas of the north coast throughout 2020.

The Northman stars Alexander Skarsgard as Nordic prince Amleth and features Hollywood heavyweights including Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Anya Taylor-Joy and Willem Dafoe, as well as Icelandic singer Björk.

The action-filled epic follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder, and is set in 10th century Iceland.

Film fans spotted a ‘Viking’ village being constructed in early 2020, among the rolling hills of picturesque Torr Head in Co Antrim. This small cluster of wooden buildings reportedly served as the Icelandic village in 'The Northman'.

Today, the first trailer for the Northman was released globally. In it, we get a first look at the Viking village setting, as well as seeing how the north coast has been used to act as Icelandic fjords.

The trailer release comes after some of the Hollywood stars who travelled to Northern Ireland for filming The Northman spoke of their affection for it.

Hollywood star Nicole Kidman said that she "loves Belfast" and wants to move to the city.

Speaking on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast about the movie, Kidman said she loved her time in Belfast and said that the city felt 'special' to her.

She said: "I was shooting in Belfast. I love Belfast now.

"The weirdest thing was, I'm in Belfast, and I have this way of always going, 'maybe I should move here' - I'm that person."

Meanwhile, actor Ethan Hawkes said he had "wonderful" time here.

Hawke, 50, told Brendan O’Connor on RTE Radio 1: “One of the highlights of my Covid experience was going to Ireland.

“I had a role in a Robert Eggers film that we shot in Northern Ireland in Belfast.

“I had a wonderful experience doing that.

The Northman will be released in cinemas on April 21, 2022.
