The Northern Quarter looks incredible as New York in film set for Spider-Man spin-off Morbius

Yellow taxis in Stevenson Square, a subway station called Front Street and even a hot dog stand.

You could be forgiven for getting a bit confused if you were walking round the city centre today.

Parts of the Northern Quarter have been transformed into downtown New York for the new Jared Leto superhero film Morbius.

Scenes from the hotly anticipated Spider-Man spin-off are being filmed around the Stevenson Square and Oldham Street this week.

Leto stars as Spider-Man villian Dr Michael Morbius, a scientist who turns into a vampire after attempting to self-treat a rare blood disease.

Former Dr Who star Matt Smith also appears as Morbius's Loxias Crown, while True Detective star Adria Arjona plays Morbius's fiance Martine Bancroft.

And producers are pulling out all the stops to recreate Manhattan in Manchester.

Blue U.S. Mail postboxes,  USA Today and New York Times news stands, a blue and white New York City bus and a Ford Mustang were also spotted on set today.

An onlooker said: "They seem to be setting up and preparing everything today.

"There's make up teams hanging around and people setting up New York street signs and there's a blue New York bus parked in Stevenson Square.

"There must be a few hundred people here watching, but they haven't started filming yet. It's really interesting to see."

Leto wasn't spotted on set today, but a stunt man was later seen dangling from a wire from a building on Port Street as he rehearsed scenes.

Manchester, and the Northern Quarter in particular, has doubled up as New York on a few occasions in the past.

In 2010 Chris Evans filmed scenes for Captain America here, with Dale Street providing the backdrop to a dramatic car chase.
