The Northern Lights could be visible over Dublin skies this weekend

There's a very "good chance" that Dubliners will be able to see the Northern Lights this weekend, stargazing experts are predicting.

A solar storm on its way to Earth means that the aurora borealis could be visible as far south as Cork, Astronomy Ireland editor David Moore says.

The spectacular light show is sometimes visible from Co Donegal, but Mr Moore says that they could light up the night sky across the entire country as the solar storm shunts the natural phenomena southwards.

Dublin weather forecast: Rainy spells expected with weekend frost predicted

He told the Irish Independent: "Certainly over Donegal as the horizon looks over the ocean where are there no facing lights, but it’s been seen all over the country before, even as far down as Cork."

Stargazers have reported seeing the Northern Lights from the top of Howth Hill in previous years, and the scenic north Dublin spot is probably the best spot to see them in the capital.

A dark sky is necessary to see the lights clearly, but Mr Moore said people might be lucky to see them on Saturday night.

He added: "We’re hoping it’ll be extra strong. We’re advising everyone to be watching the northern horizon, especially if you’ve got a great dark sky."
