Newcastle was the busiest train station in the North East last year with 8.9m entries and exits.
The figures, from the Office of Rail and Road, show a 1.8% rise in the number of people using the station compared to 2017/18.
Newcastle ranks as the 52nd most used station in Britain, though this is down from 48th the previous year.
As well as entries and exits, the station was also used by passengers changing trains on 376,208 occasions last year.
Meanwhile, Durham station saw more than 2.8m entries and exits, while four stations in Northumberland clocked more than 300,000 passengers each. Berwick upon Tweed was the busiest in Northumberland with a figure of 571,130.
Elsewhere, Sunderland saw 441,554 entries and exits, while the Metrocentre station in Gateshead had 301,738.
At the other end of the scale, three stations in Northumberland were the least used in 2018/19.
Acklington had just 320 entries and exits, Pegswood had 2,364 and Chathill had 2,546.
Nationally, London Waterloo was the busiest station in Britain last year, with 94.2m entries and exits.
