A double bank holiday in May gives families an opportunity to spend some time enjoying the best that the North East has to offer.
Families who hope to get away for a short break can enjoy one of several holiday and caravan parks in the region but choosing the best option can save holidaymakers over £100 if they are savvy.
You can take a look at the best camping and caravan sites in the North East as rated by holidaymakers but there are other options to keep the cost of a weekend break down.

We have compared holiday prices for a three-day stay at North East holiday parks over the weekend of 5 May to 8 May for a family of four. The prices are accurate for two adults and two children, although similar prices will be available for smaller families too.
The data shows booking a Haven holiday could be over £100 more expensive than rival holiday parks for the weekend as high demand for sites in Berwick means prices are higher and caravan availability is limited. Holidaymakers can pay as little as £229 for a family of four by looking at rival holiday sites including Parkdean and Hoseasons.
Haven
The cheapest Haven holiday in the North East is at Berwick for three nights. The self-catering caravan sleeps four people with a maximum of two adults. It is £362 for the Haven Hideaway and £382 for the standard Haven Saver holiday.
The park includes indoor and outdoor pools, restaurants including a Papa John's, a shop and entertainment, although the Haven Hideaway option does not provide access to all amenities.
Elsewhere in the North East, it is £372 for the Haggerton Castle site for the Hideaway option and over £400 for the standard caravan across the same bank holiday weekend for a family of four.
Haven says only a handful of caravans are left to book for the bank holiday weekend beginning 5 May but there may be a way to get a short break in the North East at a lower price by shopping around.

Parkdean
Rival holiday park company Parkdean is offering four different locations within the Northumberland and County Durham area at a lower price than the cheapest holiday in the region for Haven.
A three-night stay at Parkdean's Cresswell Towers Holiday Park in Northumberland is priced at £249 for two adults and two children for the weekend beginning Friday 5 May. The park has an indoor pool and is five minutes walk from Druridge Bay and the beach. The park has a newly-refurbished restaurant and bar as well as entertainment.
Cresswell Towers is not the only Parkdean holiday to cost less than the Haven deals. Whitley Bay and Crimdon Dene are both listed at £229 for the bank holiday weekend. Sandy Bay, near Ashington, is priced at £279 for the same weekend and provides access to the nearby beach.

Hoseasons
Hoseasons also offers stays for a family of four at Cresswell Towers for same £249 price as Parkdean. It also lists Crimdon Dene at £229 for the three nights.
The holiday company also has a three-night stay in Witton Castle in County Durham for £389, which is slightly more expensive than the cheapest Haven deal for the same weekend. Golden Sands Holiday Park, one of the top rated parks in the area, is listed at a little under £400 for the bank holiday weekend.
