The North East emergency service personnel recognised in the Queen's birthday honours list

Four people who work to make our emergency services what they are, have been recognised in the Queen's birthday honours list.

Every year, the monarch recognises those who have gone above and beyond in their field.

This time round, those working in the police, ambulance service and fire service in the North East have all been rewarded.

Chief Constable Mike Barton (Newcastle Chronicle)

Durham Constabulary chief Mike Barton was made CBE in for services to policing after a near four-decade long career.

He said: "When I became a police officer 39 years ago, CBEs were for the glitterati, royals and people I had never met, so to be honoured like this is taking a bit of getting my head around."

Paul Nicholson, assistant director of IT at the North East Ambulance Service, was given the Queen's Ambulance Medal for his work behind the scenes over a 24-year career.

Mr Nicholson becomes the first 'non-uniformed' officer to receive the honour and was cited for revolutionising the telephone systems which ensure people get the care they need as quickly as possible.
