The North East areas where people are ignoring coronavirus lockdown - Check out our interactive map

Thousands of North East people are staying at home to help protect others during the coronavirus lockdown.

But it appears some are ignoring the restrictions - and this map shows in which areas people are not staying at home.

The Covid-19 heat map, created by Evergreen Life, is helping to build a national picture to help track the outbreak.

You can search the map for different local authority areas and see the percentage of households with symptoms, those with no symptoms, those who are staying at home, and those who are not staying at home (excluding key workers).

The search can be made for various dates from March 24 onwards, and the figures change as the lockdown continues.

For April 4, the map shows that the majority of residents in the North East were staying at home.

However in Newcastle, around 5.3% of people, excluding key workers, were not staying at home. The figure was the same in Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside.

In North Tyneside, it was 5.7%, in Northumberland 5% but in County Durham it was 11%.

Meanwhile, in Middlesbrough, 25% of people were not staying at home on that date.

The map has been developed through an app and is based on information provided by more than 25,000 users.

Evergreen Life says the number of users completing the Covid Check in growing every day.

You can search the map using our interactive tool above.
