The non-league decision that the EFL could apply to Nottingham Forest and the Championship

The National League have confirmed that they have decided to “indefinitely suspend” the current season.

This comes as a result of professional football in England being postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The EFL and Premier League took the decision to initially postpone their season until April 3, before extending the suspension until April 30.

Prior to the suspension, Nottingham Forest were in fifth place in the Sky Bet Championship table and challenging for promotion to the Premier League with nine fixtures left to play.

The Reds and the rest of the Championship are waiting for decisions to be made by the FA and EFL in the coming days and weeks.

The FA announced last week that all leagues below the top two tiers of the National League system, in both the men's and women's game, will end immediately.

All results will be expunged, with no promotion or relegation, the seasons in effect declared 'null and void'.

This will be a decision that football fans across England will take interest in, as it remains to be season if and when the campaign for the top four tiers will resume.

“The National League Board met earlier today and has reviewed its prior decision to suspend the competition until at least April 3, 2020,” a statement from the National League read.

“In consideration of the very serious and unprecedented national public health emergency caused by the coronavirus, the Board has taken the decision to suspend the National League, National League North and National League South competitions indefinitely.

“The National League is currently obtaining specialist legal advice, is consulting regularly with The Football Association and other stakeholders, and is committed to involving its member clubs in a pending decision on how best to conclude the 2019/20 season.”
