The nine areas of Leeds where lockdown is beating back Covid-19

There are the nine areas in Leeds with with four our less Covid-19 cases, according to government data.

The update published on the government’s coronavirus interactive map outlines the number of cases and rates in different areas across the country.

On the coronavirus interactive map, areas shaded in white indicate the lowest category possible and areas in purple indicate the highest infection rate.

Although areas in Leeds are still recording scores of new daily cases there is a strong indication that the lockdown restrictions are working and the number of cases is falling.

Latest data shows that the city's current infection rate is 166.4 and this is down from 209.8.

It has emerged today, however, that the city is facing surge testing after cases of the South African coronavirus variant were detected in the city.

Two cases of the COVID-19 variant were picked up in a household in Leeds in early January.

Sophisticated genomic sequencing was carried out by Public Health England which found the cases could potentially have been an incident of the South African variant, although this could not be fully determined.

Both residents isolated and have since made a full recovery and there has been no evidence of transmission in the wider community.

Residents in the city are now being asked to take part in a new programme of testing designed to help national research into the potential spread of the virus' variants.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is preparing to set out his “road map” for relaxing measures on February 22.

But he has indicated that taking a cautious approach by warning that there is an increased chance of new and concerning variants emerging if infections remain high.
